Each of us has demons to battle

A couple of months ago I was sitting in my living room when I heard my door handle rattle. I got up and turned on the porch light. No one there. So I was going to sit back down when I heard the back door handle rattle. I was a little spooked – and I don’t scare easily. I texted my neighbor (who is also my hero; he is always there for me) and told him that someone was trying to break into my house. OMW, he texted back, and believe me, he was there within two minutes. He got out of his truck with his weapon drawn. The “intruder” was my nephew. He had no explanation for his behavior. That’s because he was high. It was a bad two or three days for him. Will is an addict. He has a problem he is aware of, but like a lot of us with demons, it takes over and free will gives in to obsession and addiction.

An open letter was received by East Carroll Banner last week, addressed to “Honorable Parish Leaders, North Louisiana.” We are printing the letter here in its entirety as a Letter to the Editor:

DEAR EDITOR:

Our mutual constituents in North Louisiana need our informed guidance with regard to the proposed “Southern Spirit” power line.

The case for finishing prescription meds

I had COVID a couple of weeks ago, and I had the worst headache. Being the good nurse that I am, I had ZERO medication at home to treat it.

Farmers experiencing real uncertainty

I am witnessing for the first time in my lifetime true disorder in the agricultural world that is the backbone of our local economy and the livelihood for many of our parish residents. People I’ve never seen concerned are gravely concerned, and what we have come to believe as givens are in great question, surrounded by doubt. I suppose the eighties were the last time like this, though even those who lived through that say there is greater uncertainty now.

To cursive or not to cursive?

I have a few pet peeves. One of these is when schools do NOT teach cursive writing. The opinions on this are split, and I am on the pro-cursive side. I can’t imagine not being able to write cursive, and even more so, not being able to read it. So many of our country’s documents were handwritten in cursive. So students with no knowledge of cursive will be unable to read many of these documents.

Why is Christmas Elderly Project important?

Why is the Christmas Elderly Project important to the Lake Providence area? The Christmas Elderly Project (CEP) has been in existence for 12 years now. If you are not familiar with it, this article is about what it involves.
