Little league football comes to East Carroll

The need for activities for the youth in the parish and the desire to mentor children in northeast Louisiana has prompted two East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Deputies, Tystin White and Gregory Campbell, to start a little league peewee football program called “The Bayou League.”

Empathy happens face-to-face

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there were people that managed to live without the internet. They would eat and sleep and work and play and communicate, all without the assistance of a supercomputer in their pocket. Crazy to imagine, what if something happened? What if something didn’t happen?!

Drug delivery thwarted

Two people were arrested after allegedly attempting to pass drugs to inmates at the Riverbend Detention Center. East Carroll Parish Investigator Felton Moore said officials believe that suspects attempted to throw a green tennis ball over the fence bordering the detention center. The tennis ball opened and suspected drugs could be seen. Moore said that the tennis ball was turned over to Sheriff’s Deputy Gregory Campbell by the warden, and investigators suspect the drugs present were marijuana, suboxone strips, and a synthetic marijuana called mojo.

Let your children learn from you

Did you know that you were a digital creator? Well, if you have a Facebook page, that’s what it lists you as. A digital creator is defined as 'a self-employed professional who produces digital content— such as videos, photos, blogs, and podcasts—for an online audience, often to build a brand, educate, entertain, or sell products and services.' They distribute their work across platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and personal websites, building a loyal community and monetizing their content through brand partnerships, ad revenue, merchandise, or direct fan support.” This definition came from the AI on my computer. And like ChatGPT on my cellphone, there is no way the information can be wrong. Right? At least we are considered professionals. I’ve never really been a professional anything. Well, maybe a professional hoarder or procrastinator.

State leaders ponder spending on health care

Louisiana is likely to prioritize digitizing medical records and tuition forgiveness for rural health care practitioners in its application for a piece of the new $50 billion federal rural health care fund. The Trump administration formally kicked off the application process earlier this month for its Rural Health Transformation Program.

Managing chronic conditions in rural areas

Living with a chronic condition like diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma can be challenging—especially in rural areas. But with the right tools and support, you can take control of your health.

We're all feeling 'a little peculiar'

Twice in recent history, men I know, or tangentially know, used a weapon to vent frustration. Either by flashing it and threatening or by putting bullets in a place that made a statement (not a body, thank God). I asked my brother, “What’s going on?” “Farming, man,” he said.

Meta buildout causing a mess in Richland

When I first heard that Richland Parish was getting a new multi-billion dollar Meta center, I was a little green with envy. I mean, I look around us and I wonder why other small parishes can snag businesses and we cannot. Don’tgetmewrong.Iam most grateful for the Lake Providence Port and the businesses that it enhances, but good grief, we can’t even entice a Dollar General to the big city of Transylvania while West Carroll Parish just got their fifth Dollar General. You think that’s not a big deal, but for those that live in the Alsatia/Transylvania area, we have to drive 14 miles to Lake Providence or 16 miles to Tallulah for bare essentials.

Southern cooking is just better

I love being at home. I love sitting in my recliner turning on the television to some mindless food show and working a crossword puzzle or playing solitaire on my tablet. I turn on the food shows because my hands have to be busy doing something, and I can multitask while I am listening to the food shows. Plus, I really enjoy them: Guy’s Grocery Games, Beat Bobby Flay, Chopped, etc.

Having it all might not be the dream

What is it to sacrifice? Last week I had the opportunity to observe and interact with a handful of young children. It was pretty typical of what I’ve seen all my life.
