Local woman, educator celebrates 100 years

A Lake Providence resident celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday with family and friends. Mrs. Ethel Sargent Harris, a devoted educator, woman of faith, family matriarch, and community servant, was born on August 19, 1926. She attended East Carroll Training School in 1945, laying the foundation for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service.

Heat and lack of rain cause fires

High temperatures in East Carroll Parish, and near record breaking heat index values of 110 to 115 degrees, are doing more than just raising energy bills and parching late summer crops. According to Bo Holt, a volunteer rural fire fighter, he was called to put out fires four times this past Sunday alone.

Together for Hope sets students up for success

Louisiana has the highest rate of poor military veterans in the nation with more than 22,000 former service members living below the poverty line, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau and Veterans Administration data.

Quick and easy ideas for roasting veggies

Roasting is one of my favorite ways to cook vegetables. It is so easy and makes vegetables taste so good! When vegetables are roasted at high cooking temperatures, it causes their natural sugars to caramelize. That creates golden, slightly crisp edges that are so tasty.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

2 teaspoons chili powder 1 ½ teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon onion powder ¼ teaspoon dried oregano ¼ teaspoon black pepper Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Store in an airtight container until ready to use. Yields: Equivalent to one taco seasoning packet
