Start seeds now for early flowers, veggies

Tired of the cold, gray doldrums of winter? Here’s something to look forward to: Spring isn’t all that far away, and now is the time to get your seeds started for many warm-season annuals, vegetables and herbs.

University history tells bigger story

As the only university in the United States founded by a Catholic saint, Xavier University of Louisiana might be, in a literal sense, sacred. But to those who walk the grounds of the campus one century after its founding, its sanctity comes less from its founder and more from the service that its students and alumni do for one another and for their community.

Celebrating the lives of East Carroll residents

Time is flying. I can’t believe it’s already February. It looks like things have been a little slow lately. Or maybe I just don’t get out enough. Do you have a car that, after you get off of work, drives itself to your residence and does not want to make any detours? I do, unfortunately.

Transylvania community loses tire business to devasting fire

A fire that destroyed the Transylvania Service Station and the former restaurant next door is now in the hands of the State Fire Marshal. East Carroll Parish Rural Fire Chief Tim Braswell said that the fire seemed to have started in the back of the building on the east side of the service station at approximately 4:18 p.m. last Thursday. The building was a complete loss, Braswell said.

Hwy. 134 detour completed early

page 4 After nearly a year and a half of detouring, La. Highway 134 in eastern East Carroll was officially open for travel last week. Work on two bridges on Hwy. 134 – one spanning Carrawy Lake and one crossing Joe’s Bayou – was completed recently, and actually completed ahead of time; the Department of Transportation and Development had originally estimated a March 3, 2025 finish date. Motorists had been forced to detour on Highways 577, 580, and 877.

Counting the cost of political division

Well, I’m back and thrilled to use my words to serve my hometown again this Black History Month. I’m grateful that my articles moved hearts and minds last year, fueling my excitement to do it for 2025. Before we dive deep into the depths of LP’s Black culture, accomplishments and history, I’d like to set the stage for a discussion about politics—BIG, SCARY, POLITICS.
