Maria's serves up new energy, great food

Walk into Maria’s Mexican Restaurant on Highway 65 and you’ll barely remember the many lives of that building before. The only resemblance it has to what it was for 20 years – the Dock – happens only when you look at its particular positioning on the lake. Decorative tile and exotic lighting, an expansive bar, and a view of the water you see upon entering due to its openness – you might hardly even remember you’re in Lake Providence.

School board votes in officers for year

Members of the East Carroll Parish School Board had a pleasant surprise awaiting them when they arrived for the regular monthly meeting last Tuesday. A large basket of snacks and goodies had been left for them at their designated seats at the media center.

Hwy. 134 delays announced

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has issued yet another tentative date for the reopening of Highway 134 in the Monticello area. DOTD has initially stated that Highway 134, which is a major highway for East Carroll, would be reopened by the first of year. New information on the website has pushed the date back to March 8, 2025. The DOTD website stated that the road construction includes improvements to drainage, raising the roadway and improving existing ditches, and protection against roadway flooding.

Locals urged to abide by law, post address numbers

Adhering to a little known law in East Carroll could save the lives of local citizens. In 2001, the East Carroll Parish Police Jury passed an ordinance requiring that all residences and businesses have their address numbers posted. According to communications director Debra Hopkins, this has been a problem. “While most of our residents have posted their address numbers, there are many houses and businesses that have not. This poses a problem for emergency response, especially in the rural areas, when they are responding to a call,” Hopkins said. Hopkins added that it was difficult for ambulance drivers, law enforcement or firefighters to respond timely if they have to look for the residence.

Help! I kill every indoor plant I touch

Do you have a black thumb? What’s that — you’ve never heard of a black thumb? It’s the opposite of having a green thumb. Perhaps you can relate to this scenario: You buy a plant that is promoted as low maintenance or beginner friendly — something like pothos ivy or snake plant.
