Three public education advocates who were challenging Gov. Jeff Landry’s plan to pay for teacher pay stipends by cutting money from public schools’ general operations withdrew their lawsuit last week.

The weather cooperated for most of the weekend as East Carroll Parish and Lake Providence joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the United States’ 250 anniversary. Red, white and blue was the recurring theme for decorations and even apparel as the town filled with people coming together for reunions and family gatherings. Boats, swimmers, sunbathers, pools, and other water sports were the obvious favorites as everyone took the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. The smell of grills was prevalent in the air, and many of the yards were crowded with vehicles.

The former secretary-treasurer of the East Carroll Parish Police Jury has filed a lawsuit in the 6th District Judicial Court against the parish’s governing body claiming unlawful removal from office and emotional stress, pain and suffering from public discussion in what should have been a private executive session.

What a week, y’all. I have to start it off, though, with birthday wishes for Mrs. Jean Oswalt. Mrs. Jean has been suffering a few health problems and has been scheduled for rehab, but her family found the time to gather to give her a great birthday celebration. Every child, grandchild and great grandchild was in attendance, in addition to nieces and a nephew and their families. People came from all around – New York, Boston, Dallas, Cleveland, Florida, Nashville, Denver and all corners of our state – to honor this great lady. And no one could deserve it more than Mrs. Jean. She has been the matriarch of her family and a pillar at the Methodist Church for so long. She is truly the best.
