Goin' on a bear hunt?

The Louisiana Black Bear Hunting Lottery will open to state hunters July 28 and run through Augusy 28, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced. The hunt, administered by LDWF, will be held in Louisiana Black Bear Management Areas 1, 2 and 4 (which includes East Carroll Parish; see map) from December 6 to December 21, with 26 permits issued, an increase from the 11 permits issued last year.

EC Baptist Association holds Annual Session

The 128th Annual Session of The East Carroll Baptist Association began with a Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, July 5, sponsored by the Woman's Auxiliary. After a traditional breakfast, the congregation assembled in the sanctuary where Minister Linda Flowers of Monroe, formerly of Lake Providence, spoke on the theme 'The Power of Prayer'.

Law practice is a family affair for the Bristers

When Andy and Laurie Brister returned to East Carroll Parish after law school, they had no intention of making Lake Providence their home base. It was a temporary move until more important decisions were finalized. Andy went to work for McGlinchey Stafford doing general practice in 1989 while Laurie was attending law school. They had initially met at a Christian legal society meeting while both were in law school. In 1991, Laurie graduated from law school, the couple married, and Andy moved his big-city (Metairie) lawyer wife to one of the most rural parishes in the state.

Celebrating the lives of East Carroll residents

I want to start off my column with a story that touched my heart so much. Mike Coullard is a local businessman in Lake Providence and very well known. I don’t know him personally, but I know his wife, and I have enjoyed keeping up with their sons’ athletic prowess.

City cemetary receives new life from volunteer work

We should not forget those whose shoulders we stand on A group of men meet quietly when the weather allows at the Lake Providence Cemetery. Over two years ago, a meeting was held about how to better maintain the grounds.

Parish 911 to receive new fiber internet

In its effort to phase out landline telephones and replace them with digital, AT&T is replacing copper wiring with fiber internet in Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) around the nation. A PSAL is the 911 dispatch where emergency calls are taken. AT&T plans to launch the first replacement projects in Louisiana, and they intend to start with East Carroll Parish.
