Celebrating the lives of East Carroll residents

What was a longer holiday weekend for most folks left us with a shorter deadline for the paper. But we’ll manage to figure it out. Seems like we always do. There was a Mardi Gras parade at Briarfield Academy. It wasn’t a big parade, but it was just as grand and lavish, and the beads were flowing just as freely as its larger counterparts.

Well, hopefully we are back to normal living after a rough two weeks. I sure would love to hear about how some of you coped during this ordeal. And any stories you might have about a local, homegrown hero.

Good Thursday, everyone. Sure wish we had something to talk about. Wait. There is the matter of a small storm that passed through our area. I know that most of us are still feeling the effects of it. And I know most of us altered our lifestyle for just a little while to adapt to these conditions.

Football star gives back with gifts

Last week, nearly 40 children were presented Christmas gifts and posed for pictures with a former Lake Providence resident who is poised to enter professional league football. Santonial “TeeJay” Rice sponsored the event, and was assisted by volunteers Tracey Reynolds, Kayla Spencer, and his sister, Shamari Rice.

Happy 2026! I’m still not sure what happened to 2025. I blinked and it was gone. The holidays have had our schedule at the paper, and, indeed, in general, all discombobulated. I wanted a lot of Christmas pictures, but I think everyone was slow in posting them for me. Y’all have to do better! I want to see some family photos.

Basking in Mediterranean sun

Sixth in a series

I really won the sunshine jackpot when I arrived at the Mediterranean coast.

On my first day, I wandered slowly up the beach in Nice, France, toward a tree-covered area jutting up about 300 feet out of the sea, known as Castle Hill. I suspected it would be a good place for scenic overlooks. I later learned that, for centuries, there had been a fortified castle or citadel on top of the hill looking far out over the Mediterranean in all directions. However, Louis XIV had the castle destroyed in 1706 as a result of political and military upheavals in the area.

Whenever I think about this time of year, the first thing that I think of is a song from 1972 by Alice Cooper called “School’s Out.” Back in 1972, Alice Cooper was “out there.” I mean, he was the example of what you DON’T want your children to be. Now, he’d be kind of tame. Or at least more normal. Anyway, this song keeps blasting in my head.

Nice provides sun and blue water

In addition to the eccentric Oh-La-La Hotel I described in my last installment about Paris, I was also fond of the tiny Airbnb studio apartment that I had booked for one night.

Prom! Prom! Prom! That was the theme for the last couple of weeks, which also gave me the opportunity to pick up some pictures of some good-looking juniors and seniors. First of all, I want to acknowledge and congratulate the Colonel and His Lady which were one of several awards presented at Briarfield’s prom. This year’s Colonel & His Lady were Jack Martin & Madeline Condrey.
