Don’t get caught with plants down

As we approach the year’s end, take a moment to think about the past gardening season. Louisiana gardeners experienced challenges from late spring freezes to a severe summer drought and scorching heat. In reflecting upon the year, valuable lessons were learned, highlighting the garden’s dynamic growth. Gardeners must be adaptable and resilient and continue to learn in the face of a changing climate.

Celebrations

There was plenty to celebrate in 2021. Downtown saw an abundance of food, color, good tunes, and people, both local and visitors, at May’s Lake Providence Levee Festival, in its second year.

Caring for holiday amaryllis

Each year, the National Garden Bureau designates a specific plant to celebrate each year. The goal is to promote awareness, education and appreciation for that particular plant — and this year, one of the selections is amaryllis.

Leftovers after the feast? Here’s some ideas

Do you find yourself asking what do I do with all these leftover holiday foods? I love the fact of not having to cook the next day or two. Turkey casserole or turkey salad made with leftover turkey is just a few examples. With a little planning, meals with leftover turkey can be as delicious as your original meal. Many people travel or have multiple days of festivities and may not have the ability to consume leftovers immediately. Or there are those that intentionally make more food than is needed so we will have leftovers. Whatever your situation, the following tips will make sure you are safely consuming leftovers.

Keep Burden Gardens as a holiday destination next year

Burden Museum & Gardens recently announced Louisiana Lights: Where the Holidays Shine, a new holiday event set to open in 2024 with presenting partner, Visit Baton Rouge. Louisiana Lights is a unique and enchanting light show that gracefully unfolds within historic Windrush Gardens.

A Perfect Couple

Well Mr. Nelson, it’s that time of the year again. The glad time and the sad time. You and I made lots of beautiful memories together. We weathered a whole lot of storms together too. But then six years ago, things changed in my life forever. Because on December 23, 2017, Jesus called your name and you answered. So there’s been a black void in all of my Christmases since that time.
