We learned a lot about our neighbors in East Carroll in 2023 through feature stories and profiles. Some interesting people we included in the pages of Providence Journal last year included Catie Travis, new employee of Doorway to Louisiana’s Byerley House; Lincoln Powell Jr., formerly of Lake Providence who runs his own fashion business; Cleophus Washington, who overcame adversity to have a law practice; Rosie McDaniel, retired after years of service from the East Carroll Parish Library; Gerald Wayne Bowers, who sold the long-time Lake Street business called Price Cutter; Christopher-Martin Daffin Williams, basketball coach for General Trass; Lee Toney, local woodworking artist featured at high-profile craft events; Sr. Bernie Barrett, who helped so many people locally through Catholic Charities and her religious order’s charity; Shellie Tomlinson, local author; and Sara Beth Howard, who shared her experiences with breast cancer.
Others were recognized for the work they do in the community and state including Andy Brister, named as a commission of Wildlife and Fisheries; Krishanda Sanders, East Carroll library director given the Louisiana State Bar Association Friend of Pro Bono award; Brad McIntyre, employee of Goldman Equipment named top technician for John Deere; Dr. Don Bailey, retired longtime Lake Providence physician; and Lee Broussard, recognized at Memorial Day for being one of the last to witness the signing of peace agreement with the Japanese after World War II. Jong’s Grocery and the Jong family celebrated 75 years of business in East Carroll Parish. And we introduced a new feature called LP Roots, which highlights people who have ties to East Carroll Parish in some way: Mann Boughton, son of Sherman Boughton, former resident; Daryl Honore II, grandson of current residents Amos and Gloria Wright; Jessie Bishop, sister of current resident Connie Reed, and Izzy Beselman, granddaughter of former residents Jim and Mullady Crigler.
