Police jury changes CDL policy

After passing the consent agenda items at last week’s regular police jury meeting, Road and Drainage Chairman Roger Clement asked the full jury to approve a recommendation to change its policy dealing with the requirement that employees at the department have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

The police jury policy was that all employees had to have a CDL before they were hired, after the police jury had to obtain funds to get a group of workers their CDL through a program affiliated with Workforce Investment. But Clement and President Kendall Thompson say there are certain jobs at the department, such as cutting grass, that do not require a driver’s license or CDL license and therefore that requirement should not impact one’s ability to get hired at the department.

The jury accepted their recommendation, however, the new policy states that any new employee that is hired by the road and drainage department has six months to acquire a regular driver’s license and then, by the one year mark, must have a CDL.

The meeting was also attended by the eight grade 4-H members from Griffin Middle Academy. Local 4-H agent LeKeisha Powell brought the class to the meeting to develop an understanding of governmental agencies at work.

While 4-H appreciation week is in October, the group got a civics lesson last week and took a group photo with members of the jury (see photo, page 8).

Vice-President Kofi Darden requested that Secretary/ Treasurer NaTosha Davis change her name on the sanitation committee report to reflect Darden, as she has done on her desk tag.
