River reaches historic levels
Dredging by the U.S. Corps of Engineers has been occurring for a few weeks as the Mississippi River continues to fall, creating operational problems for barges coming into the Lake Providence Port. Port officials say that this is the fourth year in a row that the river has dropped to historic levels, creating headaches and high costs for farmers, elevators, and barge operators. East Carroll Parish depends on the river to export the majority of its crops.
