Rep. re-elected, renewals pass

Last Saturday’s election, despite another low voter turnout, yielded results for several runoff races. In the House of Representatives race for the 21st district, C. Travis Johnson won re-election against Jamie Davis.

Johnson won the multi-parish house seat with 4,787 votes to Davis’ 4,353. The legislative seat represents East Carroll, Catahoula, Concordia, Franklin, Madison, and Tensas parishes. The turnout in East Carroll Parish for this race was 26.4 percent. Johnson won the parish by a vote of 690 to 468.

In other local election news, all four of the parish tax renewals easily passed. Proposition number one was for the Byerley House. It was for five years, a one mill property tax, $55,300. The renewal passed by a margin of 847 to 319.

Proposition number two was a two mill property tax for the Louisiana State Cotton Museum. The tax brings in $110,000 a year. This tax renewal passed by a margin of 860 to 307.

Proposition number three was an East Carroll Parish Library tax renewal. The five year 8.22 mill property tax brings in $454,460 a year. It passed by a margin of 922 to 246.

Proposition number four was for the East Carroll Parish Community Action Agency. This tax is a two mill property tax that brings in $110,575 a year. The tax passed by a margin of 877 to 291.

In statewide election news, all of the Republican candidates easily won their races in the runoff election. In the Secretary of State race, Nancy Landry defeated Gwen Collins-Greenup by receiving 67 percent of the vote.

Liz Murrill defeated Lindsey Cheek for the Attorney General position with 65 percent of the vote.

John Fleming will serve as State Treasurer for the next four years after defeating Dustin Granger by a margin of 65 percent to 35.

Three of the four statewide constitutional amendments passed. The proposed constitutional amendment that provides relative to the use of monies in the Revenue Stabilization Trust Fund failed by a vote of 56 percent to 44. This measure would have allowed the legislature to use up to $250 million to alleviate the annual budget deficit, if approved by twothirds of the house.

The amendments to provide relative to timing of gubernatorial action on a bill and related matters, repeal certain funds in the state treasury, provide for an ad valorem tax exemption for certain first responders all were approved and will be added to the state constitution.
