Setting the scene...

After his temptation by the devil, Jesus has called Peter, Andrew and the sons of Zebedee to be his disciples. Now he begins his ministry – at a town on the shore of the Sea of Galilee..

The Scripture...

They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

A prayer...

Holy and awesome God, your Son’s authority is found in integrity and living truth, not the assertion of power over others. Open our imaginations to new dimensions of your love, and heal us of all that severs us from you and one another, that we may grow into the vision you unfold before us. Amen.

LSU AgCenter experts gave farmers this month the first good news in awhile when they reported that the costs of inputs like fertilizer and fuel, while still high, are trending downward. According to Brian Hilbun, a research associate in the AgCenter Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, overall projection costs are projected to decrease by about 7% this year with fertilizer, diesel and some farm chemicals coming down.

Two positions were filled last week at the Louisiana State Cotton Museum, which has been closed to the public over the past few months while state officials went through a hiring process. Maddie Duhon has been hired as full-time tourist information officer, while Andrea Davis has been hired as part-time assistant tourist information officer.

Several area farmers have utilized radishes as cover crops this season

Several area farmers have utilized radishes as cover crops this season. Cover crops are intended to protect the ground from wind and rain, limiting soil erosion, but can offer benefits below the soil surface, as well, according to the LSU AgCenter. “They help to cycle nutrients through the system,” explained AgCenter soil scientist Lisa Fultz. “They take up the calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and nitrogen that are all sitting in the soil, put it into the biomass and then redistribute it at the soil surface. That then can get recycled back into the system and made available for future plants.”

The frigid temperatures

The frigid temperatures and precipitation the parish experienced last week brought migrating birds back to Lake Providence. Once again, the American White Pelican has stopped here on its southward journey, pushed out from the north by frozen lakes and rivers.
