Celebrating the lives of East Carroll residents

Happy 100th birthday, Mr. Simon Washington, Sr.! When you get to that age, you need to be number one. So this week, we have Mr. Simon as number one. Mr. Simon is still living at home in the Elm Street Apartments. He has a sitter, Willie Matthews, who I have been told is second to none. Mr. Simon has had a stroke, so he is a little difficult to understand, but his mind is still just as clear. His son, Simon Washington, Jr., lives in an apartment close by, so he has family and friends. Happy, happy birthday, Mr. Simon!

Darlene Robinson serves up easy, family-friendly dishes

“I loved to cook,” stated Cook of the Month, Darlene Robinson. But sometimes really good cooks just don’t use recipes. This is Darlene. When she was asked to provide two of her best recipes, she had a stricken look on her face. Seems she had NO written recipes. So with the help of her daughter, we manage to get a couple of her best written down. Now, if you’ve ever had the benefit of enjoying lunch out at the truck stop, you may recognize at least one of the recipes, but really, anything Darlene cooks is good.

Local land yields huge alligator

Local farmer Nolan Parker and a group of his college friends from Mississippi State had a kill from a dove hunt weekend. Not a dove, but a 11’10” alligator estimated to be at least 35 years old.

Port busy with river, harvest, Meta activity

The congestion at the Lake Providence Port is almost over, says Winn Nettles, deputy director of the Lake Providence Port Commission. In the past week, farm trucks have lined Highway 65 South in both the northbound lanes and the southbound lanes, causing traffic congestion that has halted traffic in some cases as much as 45 minutes to an hour.

Texts about electrical outages cause confusion

Facebook pages for updates East Carroll Parish emergency response officials were busy Wednesday, August 27, checking out a rumor that the entire parish would be without electrical service on Thursday of last week. No outage occurred but there was plenty of confusion.
