Law practice is a family affair for the Bristers

When Andy and Laurie Brister returned to East Carroll Parish after law school, they had no intention of making Lake Providence their home base. It was a temporary move until more important decisions were finalized. Andy went to work for McGlinchey Stafford doing general practice in 1989 while Laurie was attending law school. They had initially met at a Christian legal society meeting while both were in law school. In 1991, Laurie graduated from law school, the couple married, and Andy moved his big-city (Metairie) lawyer wife to one of the most rural parishes in the state.

Police jury readvertises sale of park

The East Carroll Parish Police Jury ways and means committee agreed to schedule another meeting to discuss the rural fire department at their meeting held on July 7. Secretary-Treasurer Ronata Johnson said that she knew the board wanted rural fire chief Tim Braswell to attend the meetings, but that she was unable to contact him. According to jurors, they have yet to receive invoices detailing agreed-upon work done to update the fire department.

City cemetary receives new life from volunteer work

We should not forget those whose shoulders we stand on A group of men meet quietly when the weather allows at the Lake Providence Cemetery. Over two years ago, a meeting was held about how to better maintain the grounds.

Parish 911 to receive new fiber internet

In its effort to phase out landline telephones and replace them with digital, AT&T is replacing copper wiring with fiber internet in Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) around the nation. A PSAL is the 911 dispatch where emergency calls are taken. AT&T plans to launch the first replacement projects in Louisiana, and they intend to start with East Carroll Parish.

Town board votes to staff police

The Lake Providence Police Department has police officers patrolling the streets and dispatchers manning the phones after the town’s board of aldermen voted last week at a special meeting to hire six people recommended by Police Chief Leroy Threats.

Happy National Eat Your Vegetables Day! It is so humorous to go and look at the special “holidays” that fall on each day. Some of them are unbelievable. Anyway, I hope everyone has stayed cool because there seems to be no end to this heat.
