As temperatures warm up across Louisiana, so does termite activity. Homeowners may soon begin to notice large swarms of winged insects in and around their homes.

Technology at police jury gets boost from legislature

Thanks to the intervention of the East Carroll Parish’s legislators, the police jury will get an upgrade this week. Ronata Johnson, Police jury secretary-treasurer, said that Rep. Travis Johnson and Sen. Katrina Jackson- Andrews awarded the police jury $50,000 in emergency funds to update the technology in the jury office.

Together for Hope brings needed service to parish

A newly-formed diaper bank in Lake Providence will be giving away not only free diapers, but baby wipes and feminine products, as well. Together for Hope, a Lake Providence nonprofit led by Wanda Manning, has scheduled the event for today (May 22) from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Town gets first look at budgets

The Lake Providence Board of Aldermen will once again tackle money issues at a June 12 meeting. Two ordinances were introduced at last week’s Town of Lake Providence meeting – one to amend the FY20242025 budget and another to approve a FY2025-2026 budget.

District seeks assistance in naming school

Members of the community will have the unique opportunity of assisting in selecting the new name of the blended elementary school for the 2025-26 school year. Meagan Brown, East Carroll Parish school superintendent, issued a press release that stated that when they began the important steps of naming the unified elementary school, they wanted to honor the history of the previous schools.

Police kept busy with local crime

The death of a pedestrian was the first of three violent incidents last week. According to the Louisiana State Police, the pedestrian was standing in the roadway wearing dark clothing when he was struck by an unknown vehicle who failed to stop.

Church marks 139 years

The Central #1 Baptist Church, located at the corner of Ransdell and Scott streets in Lake Providence, will be celebrating 139 years of service to God and to God's people, on May 18 at 5 p.m. Special guest will be Pastor Terry Moore of The Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Tallulah. The pastor of Central #1 is Dr. Raymond C. Gill Sr. All are invited to attend this grand occasion.
