Celebrating the lives of East Carroll residents

Happy International Kangaroo Awareness Day! Yes, really. I guess this special day was necessary since so many people are treating their pet kangaroos improperly. But it is also Chocolate Chip Day and Send Someone Flowers Day. Anyone wishing to celebrate the latter two, I am willing to sacrifice and volunteer to be your recipient.

General Trass High School

General Trass High School held its Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 6 p.m. Smiles lit the faces of the graduating members of General Trass High School’s Class of 2025 as they entered the auditorium to “Pomp and Circumstance”. “Know Your Worth, To Know What Works, To Know That You Have What It Takes” was the class motto. Family and friends awaited on their feet as the class precisely marched to their appointed seats.

Briarfield Academy

Briarfield Academy held its graduation ceremony last Friday, May 9, at 6 p.m. on the school’s front lawn. Head of School Lisa Walters announced that the 17 graduates had been awarded and accepted approximately $750,000 in scholarship money. The following are each student’s plans for after graduation.

Get the REAL ID or have trouble with your travels

As of early this month, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer accept state-issued identifications that are not REAL ID compliant at TSA security checkpoints. All airline passengers 18 years and older, including TSA PreCheck members, must present REAL ID-compliant identification or another acceptable ID, such as a passport, at TSA security checkpoints.

Proposed budget to include teacher stipend

The Louisiana House of Representatives leadership added money to its state budget proposal to avoid a public school teacher pay cut that was expected after a March constitutional failed to pass. The House Appropriations Committee approved a budget plan Monday that contains $198 million to cover stipends for K-12 school teachers and school support staff.

Schools add one more day to year

The official last day for East Carroll public schools will now be May 23, not May 22. The board learned that closures during the year for weather emergencies necessitated the extension of the school year in order to make up state-mandated instruction hours, according to Meagan Brown, superin- tendent.

Town brings up water grade

The Town of Lake Providence brought its water system grade up to a C grade for 2024 from an F grade in 2023. The Louisiana Department of Health, which issues the grades each year, posted the grades on its website at the beginning of the month.
