BA teams grab tourney wins

Briarfield’s junior varsity girls and boys basketball teams, both coached by Blake Ratliff, brought home championship trophies from the district tournament held at Riverdale Academy on Saturday. In the final game, which the girls team went straight into as the number 1 seed, they defeated Claiborne Academy 24-23, with Anna Beth Russell and Lila Anne Frith high scorers with 8 points each.

LDWF accepting applications for turkey hunts, fishing

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is accepting applications for Wildlife Management Area (WMA) lottery turkey hunts and the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WCA) fishing lottery. The deadline to apply is February 7.

Williams transfers to Division 1 ULM

Wydett Williams Jr. left Lake Providence a star of the General Trass Panthers football team, went on to spend two years excelling on the field of Delta State University, and next year will be found beneath the lights of University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Malone Stadium.

General Trass Panthers football team was well represented on the 2023 District 2-2A All District Team, according to Head Coach Toriano Wells. Panther players who received all district honors include: first team offense: Kameron Williams, senior, Anton Davis, junior, Joshua Hopkins, junior; second team offense: Keimare Campbell, senior, Aaron Martin, sophomore, Jamarion Powell, sophomore; first team defense: Kameron Williams, Twan Wilson, junior, Ahmonie Williams, junior; second team defense: Stephon Everfield, senior, Dylan Baker, senior, Za’Corrion McCallum, junior, J’Bion Newson, sophomore.

Basketball season at Briarfield heating up

Briarfield basketball is off to a strong start, with all four teams predominantly winning out of the gate. Coach Blake Ratcliff, who began his career at Briarfield last year coaching both boys’ squads, is now at the helm of all four teams. “It’s busy,” he said, “but it’s so important to get with the young ones too, to develop that foundation and move forward and see where they’re at. We want to get to work establishing what is to come.”

Lead changes as contest comes down to the wire

The weekly contest has entered its final week. Due to the Providence Journal office being closed for Thanksgiving, contestants must submit their picks by placing them in the drop box in front of the office by 5 pm on Friday, November 24, 2023. Keep in mind that there is no different deadline due to the holiday. The picks are due still on Friday.

Season ends for Panthers, Williams impresses

The General Trass Panther Football team ran into a foe last Friday night that was too much to handle despite their season’s growth. The Panthers went down in defeat at the hands of the fourth seed Haynesville squad to the score of 48-22.
