What a weekend we had in Lake Providence! Fun, laughter, reunions, and getting together with family and friends. Every day I would get an “excessive heat advisory” that usually expired within 12 to 13 hours. I’ve got news for them: it never expired. I know it’s been hotter before but it sure doesn’t seem like it. The hot weather didn’t stop our folks from celebrating our country’s independence, though.

Louisiana fig trees: History, care, varieties

July in Louisiana marks many celebrations, one of which is fig harvest season. Figs (Ficus carica), native to the Middle East and western Asia, have become naturalized in North America and are widely planted in Louisiana home gardens due to their ease of cultivation and nutritional value. With minimal effort, some yard space and plenty of sunshine, anyone can grow trees that produce figs every July.

Funds available for food, shelter help

East Carroll Parish has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program and will receive $15,178 to supplement programs in the parish. The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
