Arts group honors former resident

East Carroll residents might recognize some of the winners of the Northeast Louisiana Arts Awards last Thursday. The Edmund Williamson Artist of the Year Award went to Brandon Virgil Sr., who grew up in Lake Providence and was nominated by the Black Creatives Circle of North Louisiana.

Celebrating the lives of East Carroll

When I first proposed doing this column, I called it “Socially Speaking.” Laura (Arvin) and I discussed it, and she said that it wasn’t social as much as it was just “life.” So yes, that’s what I’m looking to bring you and get from you …. life. I think I’ll call the column “Local Living,” because I agree with Laura; it’s not always about social things, but it is always about life in East Carroll Parish. So please let me know if you have something that you think would be good, whether it is your pride in the accomplishments of your children or grandchildren, whatever. I like that and I think others do also.

Seniors build strength, resilience together

Every Monday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m., you’ll find a group of men and women working hard to build muscle, increase balance, and improve flexibility. They work to the music, some of them breaking out in song.

Beat the heat at library

The crowds seem to grow bigger as the programs stay on track for a great time at the East Carroll Parish Library. Lady Chops entertained with her musical talent before an audience of more than 127 parents and kids last week, playing her particular style of music with her drums and a little help from the audience.

Lensing-Murray engagement

Lori Elizabeth Lensing, daughter of Toney and Becky Lensing of Lake Providence, and Robert Cameron Murray, son of Donna Murray of Augusta, Georgia and Bob Murray of Chattanooga, Tennessee, announce their engagement.

Parish students given honors

Northwestern State University announces the President’s List and Dean’s List for the spring 2024 semester. Cailen Wiltcher of Sondheimer was named to the President’s List.

Grants offered to nonprofits

Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply in the latest round of grants from Northeast Louisiana Power Cooperative. NELPCO launched its OperationRoundUp program in January of 2016 with the purpose of having a positive impact on the communities within the seven parishes it serves.
