The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has announced HomeReady, a statewide initiative that modernizes how Louisiana welcomes and certifies foster and kinship families as part of the effort to modernize the state's foster care system.

Local school kids starting as young as eight and going up to 17 were out this past week cleaning up the town of Lake Providence. The clean up was part of an Adopt-A-Street program where youth are taking an active role in keeping the community clean. Niels Bolden, organizer of the event, says that in addition to making the town look better, the kids were learning responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and the importance of giving back. The cleanup event is sponsored by Life Skills Boot Camp, a nonprofit organization, and mayoral candidate, Stanley Pitts. The group goes from street to street mowing grass, cleaning out weeds and debris, and picking up limbs. The non-profit organization is accepting donations, and 100% of the proceeds they raise will go towards providing participants with school clothes, shoes, and school supplies for the upcoming school year. They also are accepting donations for bottled water, sports drinks and other beverages, work gloves, safety goggles, trash bags, hand sanitizer, and other cleanup supplies.

Qualifying for the November 3 open primary election will begin Wednesday, August 5, and continue through Friday, August 7, at the East Carroll Parish Clerk of Court’s office. Qualifying inside the city limits will be for the offices of mayor of Lake Providence, chief of police and five aldermen.

A new state agency designed to strengthen the planning, delivery, and oversight of highway and bridge construction across the state will become the overseeing agency for most of the bridges and state highways in East Carroll Parish.
