Lake Providence Fire Chief Keith Larry assured the town’s board of aldermen members last Thursday that the town’s fire rating would be going from a 10 to six within the next few months. Larry explained that he was unaware that he could count his own training hours toward certification. “The lady said that it was just short about four hours,” Larry said. “We are getting together the necessary paperwork to turn in and fix the problem.” He added that he had been working toward a number of improvements with the fire department, acknowledging that the more training the department receives, the more funds that would be available to the fire department. “The more stuff I do, the more options we have,” Larry said.

Officials with Volt Broadband, a company owned by Northeast Louisiana Power Cooperative, last week urged hunters to avoid shooting at birds perched on power or fiber lines that hang on poles. Birdshot can damage fiber optic cable, disrupt communications, and leave hunters and landowners responsible for costly repairs.

A Lake Providence resident celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday with family and friends. Mrs. Ethel Sargent Harris, a devoted educator, woman of faith, family matriarch, and community servant, was born on August 19, 1926. She attended East Carroll Training School in 1945, laying the foundation for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service.

High temperatures in East Carroll Parish, and near record breaking heat index values of 110 to 115 degrees, are doing more than just raising energy bills and parching late summer crops. According to Bo Holt, a volunteer rural fire fighter, he was called to put out fires four times this past Sunday alone.

Local schools started classes last week and just in time, Together for Hope-LA distributed the remaining Bags of Hope bags to students at Griffin-Southside Lower & Upper Elementary (GSLUE) and General Trass High School (GTHS).
