Tournament a success despite home team loses

Briarfield Academy hosted the MAIS 2A State Championship Tournament at the Bobby Holt Gymnasium last week. While both the boys' and girls' teams made it into the tournament, the girls lost in round 1 to Calhoun Academy, who they’d also fallen to in the regular season.

MAIS tournament comes to Briarfield

Briarfield Academy hosts the MAIS Class 2A State Tournament this week, and both their boys' and girls' teams have spots on the brackets. Head of school Lisa Walters said, “We are so excited to host this tournament and to welcome all of these MAIS teams to Briarfield. We plan to show them true hospitality, and hopefully to keep a couple of trophies.”

Williams Jr. earned all-state accolades

Lake Providence native and ULM football player Wydett Williams Jr. was recognized on the 2024 All-Louisiana College Football Team which was revealed on Thursday (Jan. 2) by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Summer ball to return

The Summer Youth Baseball League will be back in action this spring after receiving a grant to continue the program. The league is open for all boys and girls between the ages of five and 12. The program is currently seeking coaches, umpires, and concession stand workers.

Juvenile crime up and local leaders look for solutions

While it wasn’t a case of human wrongdoing, one of the the first incidents of the year was an attack by a pack of free-roaming dogs on another dog in the owner’s yard. The laws regarding atlarge dogs were reiterated – “No person shall suffer or permit any dog in his possession, or kept by him about his premises, to run at large on any unenclosed land, or trespass upon any enclosed or unenclosed lands of another.” While the law is clear, enforcing it has been an issue.

Local institutions see wins, face ongoing challenges

The Banner published over several editions an accounting of how governmental agencies spent the pandemic relief funds authorized by Congress starting in 2020. Charts of accounts were published showing how East Carroll governmental institutions handled the money they were allocated.

Sports coverage dominates ECB school headlines

Briarfield’s football, softball, basketball, tennis, and track teams made many headlines in 2024, and the General Trass Panther football team captured its own share of headlines by advancing all the way to the semifinals in its state playoff journey.

Panthers go far, but reach end of road

A strong 14-0 state championship team proved to be a little too much for the Panthers Friday night. The Haynesville Golden Tornadoes defeated General Trass High School, with the ending score of 52-14 at Haynesville.
